Brushwork
This week's exhibit features students' brushwork. The assignment was to "sketch with their brushes," concentrating on defining their subjects with brushstrokes rather than washes and glazing.

Mixing color three ways
The class learned to mix colors on their palettes and on their paper. They also discovered glazing as a way to get a whole different set of colors from the same primaries. As a bonus this week, we're showing three additional paintings they did on their own.

Working with washes and values
Students practiced flat, gradated and variegated washes and then used them to create skies and the illusion of distance. Some worked from photos, and others from their imaginations.

Getting the feel of paint, water and paper
The first week of the fall session produced the following prismatic and windowpane paintings. I've adapted the activities from Dory Kanter's Art Escapes to help students discover the various ways to put paint to paper.
